When You are on the Road that God wants...When You are on the Road that God Wants… Acts 14:6-20 Introduction: When we talk about our life, there is one of two roads that we can travel on. We can travel through life doing what we want to do. Following the philosophy, if it feels good do it. We like to travel on this road because we choose how it is going to look. Or we can take the road that God wants us to travel. We are not as happy about traveling this road because we don’t have any say so as to how this road is going to look. We all sign up to travel on God’s road when we make a profession of faith or a rededication of our life. But soon after we discover how difficult God’s road is and we opt to take the road we choose. So we have a question, why is it that so few people choose to travel God’s road through this life. 1. When we travel on God’s road, it does not mean that our life will be without our share of problems. VS. 6 A. Here is Paul and Barnabas doing what God wanted them to do and they had to flee the town. B. Then in vs. 19, the people Paul had been preaching to stoned him. C. There is no way that you could tell me that Paul and Barnabas thought the road they traveled to follow God did not have problems. 2. When you are on the road that God wants, He is going to do things through your life but you cannot take credit for them. VS 9 and VS 14 A. One of the hardest things for me is not making myself available for God to use rather it is not taking credit for what God has done. B. A young man walks the aisle of the church and gives his heart to Jesus. It is not my great sermon that brought him down the aisle rather it was God. C. A young lady comes to the altar to pray during the invitation. It was not the powerful invitation I gave but rather it was God who touched her heart. D. It wasn’t Paul who performed the miracles, it was God. 3. When you are on the road that God wants, don’t be surprised when those around you don’t understand what is happening to you. VS 11 A. When you go on with your spiritual life don’t be surprised when people say: “ Why are you getting so spiritual? What’s happening to you- you are not the same person? Why do you always have to bring God into the conversation?” B. The people Paul preached to didn’t understand. Instead of seeing Paul as a messenger, they thought he was a god. 4. When you are on the road that God wants, don’t be surprised when people don’t understand what you are talking about. VS 18 A. Here is the Apostle Paul preaching a sermon and the people don’t comprehend what he is talking about. He is talking about how great God is and in the end the people want to offer a sacrifice to Paul. B. I shouldn’t feel alone when I preach a sermon God gave me and when I am finished I realize that they did not get it. 5. When you travel on God’s road don’t be surprised that friends turn against you. VS 19 A. Just a few minutes earlier they wanted to worship Paul and now they want to stone him. B. When you faithfully serve God many so-called friends will drift away from you. 6. When you travel on God’s road, He is going to be faithful in spite of the storms. VS 21 A. God remained faithful to Paul despite the ordeals Paul experienced. |
